Choosing the right security program is more than simply a matter of picking the one that detects viruses and blocks other threats to the computer.
Any security software worth its salt should be able to do that. What makes the difference is ease of use, features and other extras.
Bitdefender succeeds at being both powerful and easy to use. The Professional Plus version includes anti-virus, firewall, anti-spam and anti-phishing tools. The firewall and anti-virus work well, and the virus scanner scans at roughly the same speed as its competitors.
In terms of ease of use, all of the program's features are confined to one application and control window rather than the several found on other programs.
The main window doesn't offer many options - to the point of looking sparse - but this avoids confusion and keeps the work the user has to do to a minimum, without sacrificing any features.
Installation was simple, although unlike the recently reviewed F-Secure Internet Security, Bitdefender didn't detect and remove the security programs we already had installed on our test PC. This isn't a major problem but it would have been easy to include the feature.
There are several pricing options available from the company's website, depending on how many PCs it will be used on and what components are required.
