Iraq: Sadrists criticize arrests of supporters in Amarah

Followers of radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr on Friday criticized recent arrests by Iraqi security forces of three of their locally prominent supporters in the southern city of Amarah.

The arrests Wednesday were part of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's crackdown against Shiite criminals and militias in the south in an attempt to extend the government's authority.

But Sadrist officials have complained for months that rival Shiite parties in the government are using security operations as a pretext to weaken al-Sadr's political movement ahead of provincial elections expected in the fall.
