MAN HIT BY TRAIN IN SUICIDE, POLICE SAY.(CAPITAL REGION)

An unidentified young man took his own life Monday by walking into the side of a moving freight train near the downtown Amtrak station, police said.

The 5:58 p.m. incident took place only about 20 yards beyond the western end of the Amtrak passenger platform.

``The way it looks now, he attempted and was successful in committing suicide,'' Assistant Police Chief Louis Pardi said. ``He suffered a major head injury that probably killed him instantly.''

Pardi said the victim was not carrying identification, but investigators believe he was in his early 20s.
