NSW: Hotels warned about room grab during Rugby World Cup

Hotel operators inundated with bookings for next year's Rugby World Cup have been warnedagainst accepting bookings from overseas pirate travel agents who may onsell the roomsat inflated rates.

World Cup organisers are concerned that block booking by unscrupulous speculators couldreduce hotel room availability across Australia and force up rates.

The Sydney Morning Herald says this could lead to the event being less economicallyattractive to a predicted 40,000 overseas visitors as well as many domestic tourists.

The paper says it could also cause difficulties for the World Cup's yet to be announcedofficial airlines to book rooms for an estimated 22,000 international package deals foroverseas rugby fans.

BRIAN THORBURN, general manager of commercial operations for the Australian Rugby Union, says there's already evidence of heightened interest from operators block booking rooms.

Mr THORBURN says they've already approached the major hotel chains and told them totake care when accepting bookings from overseas travel speculators.
